Volunteering in Geelong

Volunteering is integral to our operations and makes an invaluable contribution to our organisation and the community that we serve.

Thousands of people in Australia volunteer for numerous reasons including an interest in the organisation they volunteer with, to give something back to the community in which they live, or for social benefits. Whatever your reason to volunteer, the City of Greater Geelong has a variety of business or community groups that may be of interest to you.

We depend on hundreds of volunteers to deliver essential services, from aged care to children, arts, culture and events within our community.

We fully support and recognise our wonderful volunteers, who generously give up their time.

With the introduction of upcoming legislative changes to the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Volunteer Safety is a priority for our organisation.

Becoming a Volunteer

The nature of volunteering means that positions are available on an ad-hoc basis.

Our volunteers currently provide their support and expertise in the following areas within our community:

  • Geelong Heritage Centre
Are you passionate about local history or genealogy? Volunteers at the Heritage Centre work on special projects which increase the accessibility of Geelong’s archival records and enable the public to find historic information about Geelong people, places and events much easier. Volunteer projects include the arranging, transcribing, indexing and digitising of both public and private records.

Note: Due to the planned temporary relocation of operations, during building of the new Geelong Library and Heritage Centre, the Geelong Heritage Centre is unable to accept new volunteers at this time).

  • L2P Program Volunteer
L2P provides access to mentors / supervising drivers for young learner drivers who are facing significant barriers that may include no access to a vehicle or a supervising driver. If you have a love for young people, tolerance and driving experience this volunteer role may be your forte”.

  • Meals on Wheels Service Volunteer
Are you interested in delivering meals to City of Greater Geelong Aged & Disability Services clients? Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver meals and provide vital social contact for clients across Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula.

  • National Wool Museum Volunteer
Are you interested in people and stories? The timeless Australian story of wool combined with exciting contemporary exhibitions invites tourists and locals alike to celebrate Geelong’s rich agricultural and industrial pas t and to engage with Geelong’s future. As a volunteer at the National Wool Museum, get to know a new side of your City and help to bring our stories to life.

  • Potato Shed Volunteer
If you have a passion for theatre and working with the community, then the Potato Shed is the place for you.

  • Walking School Bus
Did you know that several schools in the Geelong area offer programs that encourage families to walk or cycle to school? These programs have many health and safety benefits for the families involved and for the wider community. They are only successful because they are supported by volunteers who help promote active travel and road safety activities.
