The purpose of this policy is to provide direction on the placement of electoral advertising signs on any Council land, municipal building or road, and to avoid excessive sign clutter.
This policy applies to all electoral candidates and prohibits electoral advertising signs on Council land, municipal buildings or roads.
Candidates in all levels of Government elections –
- State; and
- Local Government
are subject to this policy.
- “Council land” means all land vested in or under the control of Council, including a reserve, watercourse, jetty, reservation and the like, but excludes a road, except that part of the road which is a nature strip or footpath.
- “Municipal Building” means any building that is owned, occupied or under the management or control of Council, and includes any recreation centre which is owned, occupied or under the management or control of Council.
- “Reserve” means any land which is owned, occupied or managed or controlled by Council and dedicated or used for outdoor cultural, environmental, sporting or recreational purposes.
- “Road” has the meaning ascribed to it by Section 3 of the Local Government Act.
5. COUNCIL POLICY
The Council has the responsibility for approving an application for the placement of temporary signs on Council land, roads and in or on Municipal Buildings.
Council must remain totally impartial in relation to the promotion of a candidate/s at any democratic election at either Federal, State or Local Government level. It is therefore the policy of Council to refuse any application for the location of an election sign on any Council land, roads or Municipal Buildings within the City of Greater Geelong.
Compliance with this Policy will be monitored and enforced in accordance with Council’s operating guidelines.

Quality Records shall be retained for at least the period shown below.
