Council supports pet registration amnesty period

All dog and cat owners living in Geelong are invited to register their pets next month and avoid the risk of receiving a fine.

City of Greater Geelong Councillors last night agreed to support a pet registration amnesty period for the entire month of November 2010.

Governance portfolio holder Jan Farrell said registering your pet was an essential part of responsible pet ownership.

“Registering your pet is beneficial for the wider community and it also helps us to return lost animals to their owners,” she said.

“Registrations provide Council with data to monitor restricted breeds and animal incident trends such as barking dogs and dog attacks.”

“It also provides us with resources to deliver educational and awareness programs for the community.”

“The amnesty period is a great incentive for residents with cats or dogs to register their pets and avoid paying any penalties,” Cr Farrell said.

Under normal circumstances, pet owners who don’t register their animals risk receiving an Infringement Notice of $239.

The number of dogs and cats registered with the City of Greater Geelong at 17 August 2010 was 30,751 dogs and 9,669 cats.

Pet registration forms can be downloaded from www.geelongaustralia.com.au or picked up from any City of Greater Geelong Customer Service Centre.
