Heritage character of Newtown retained

Wednesday, 23 November 2016

Our Administrators have requested that a Heritage Overlay be placed over 103 sites in Newtown West.

There are examples of Edwardian, Victorian, Federation and interwar buildings in the suburb, which all contribute to the look and feel of Newtown. These properties were identified in the Newtown West Heritage Review, completed in 2015.

19 submissions were received as part of the public consultation. Generally those supporting the overlay wanted to preserve the heritage feel of the area and those opposed to the heritage overlay had plans for future building works.

Taking on board public comment, a number of alterations were made. We will look into introducing interim controls for the Heritage Overlay while the amendment is being considered.

The study is available to view below.

"The Heritage Overlay will protect the character of the area spanning from Upper Skene Street, Nantes Street, Shannon Avenue and Ruthven Street and the Great Western Hotel."
