Geelong CBD speed limit reduced to 40km/h in early 2017

Wednesday, 14 December 2016

We will fast track implementation of a 40km/h speed limit project for Central Geelong to improve road safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

Submissions received during a trial of the 40km/h project, carried out in collaboration with VicRoads and the Transport Accident Commission, largely supported the reduced speed limit.

The roll-out of the 40km/h zone will now be fast-tracked for implementation early next year, rather than the project being included in the City’s 2017–18 Budget.

The reduced speed limit will cost about $250,000 to roll-out, covering a city grid bordered by McKillop St, Latrobe Tce, Swanston St and the waterfront.

Our officers will also continue to monitor and report on traffic movements in surrounding streets, to determine any impact from the new zoning.

Dr Kathy Alexander - Administrator Chair

“The City is committed to doing whatever we can to improve cycling, pedestrian and driver safety across the region and in our Central Business District (CBD).
Reducing the speed limit in Central Geelong will ensure our busy CBD streets are safer and more accessible for all road users.”
