Quarterly report notes economic benefit

Thursday, 8 June 2017

Our CEO’s Quarterly Report has noted that an estimated $70 million in economic benefit for the region was generated by City-sponsored major events staged across the municipality over the summer period.

An estimated 90 percent of this figure was generated in the January to March quarter.

We sponsored a range of exciting major events via Geelong Major Events, a Section 86 Committee of Council.

It was estimated that a total of more than half a million people attended these events.

Event highlights over the summer period included:

  • Melbourne Victory A-League match held at Simonds Stadium

  • Bay Cycling Classic

  • Viper Class World Sailing Championships

  • Festival of Sails

  • Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Cycling Race

  • Australia Day Polo

  • Victorian Open Golf Championships

  • Great Australian Beer Festival

  • Ironman 70.3 Geelong

  • Pako Festa

  • Australian International Air Show

  • Schoolgirls’ Head of the River Regatta

  • Geelong Highland Gathering, and

  • Lara Food Festival

Community engagement was a major City priority, and during the January to March quarter the Community Engagement dashboard on the City’s website attracted a substantial increase in engagements from the public.

During the quarter there were more than two-thousand total page visits to the website, with the ‘Have your say’ page attracting more than one-thousand visitors.

The main website engagements for the quarter were the 2017 City of Greater Geelong calendar survey, Geelong Road Safety Survey and community sessions and the Central Geelong Community Infrastructure and Public Open Space Survey.
