This Girl Can is a Victorian Government campaign that encourages women of all ages, backgrounds, abilities and body shapes to increase their physical activity.
We know that:
- Half of Australian women don't get enough exercise and one in five women does no physical activity in a typical week.
- This is also true for Greater Geelong women. According to our Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan 2018-2021, over half of us don't meet the physical activity guidelines and around 12 per cent of us are considered sedentary.
- Women understand the health benefits of being active but worrying about being judged, feeling unfit, not being able to keep up or being a beginner stops many from getting involved.
- Nearly half of all Victorian women aged 25 and over feel intimidated by gyms and sporting clubs and around one third feel these environments aren’t welcoming to people like them.
This Girl Can – Victoria breaks down these barriers by representing a range of everyday women being physically active whenever, wherever and however they can. By showing that physical activity is for everybody in our community, we can challenge traditional gender roles and stereotypes in sport and celebrate women in this space.
This Girl Can Week 2020
This Girl Can Week is running from 23 to 29 March 2020.
This is an opportunity to welcome new and beginner participants, women returning to exercise and those looking to step it up a notch to local clubs and sporting groups throughout Geelong and across Victoria. Events and activities are tailored to all abilities and are designed to inspire women to get moving.
The City is working with other G21 Regional Councils during This Girl Can Week 2020. See our calendar of events to find out what's on in the region!
