Library to re-open within two weeks

Tuesday, 10 September 2019

The Geelong West Library and the City’s Geelong West Customer Service Centre is scheduled to re-open in time for the start of the school holidays.

The City took the precautionary measure of temporarily closing the Pakington Street building last Thursday, to address a contained, moderate growth of mould.

Detailed testing by an independent specialist found that the mould was restricted to a small area, under the carpet, near a window in the west end of the library.

The assessment found no other areas of the building had been affected.

Testing in multiple other locations – in the air and on surfaces – returned low, normal and safe readings for mould.

The City has begun the necessary repairs to the building.

A clearance certificate, confirming that the building is fit for occupancy, will be gained before the City re-opens it on Monday 23 September.

The investigation found that the moderate mould was likely the result of stormwater flooding.

A storm gate, which will be operated when strong rains are forecast, will help avoid further incidences of minor flooding.

Ahead of the re-opening, the community can attend one of the City’s six other Customer Service Centres, such as 100 Brougham Street, Geelong or 163 High Street, Belmont.

Visit www.geelongaustralia.com.au/contact for a full list of locations or to submit an enquiry.

Hirers of Geelong West Town Hall and Virginia Todd Hall can pick up the keys at the Brougham Street Customer Service Centre.

All other libraries within the region remain open – details are available at www.grlc.vic.gov.au/locate

Library patrons can visit www.grlc.vic.gov.au/news, social media channels or call 4201 0500 for up-to-date information about how library services are impacted.

Greater Geelong Director Economy, Investment and Attraction Brett Luxford

Investigators found the problem was isolated to one small surface area of the library.
We will thoroughly clean and repair the area, and install new carpet, before we re-open the building on Monday 23 September.
We’re glad we will be able to carry out the required works in time for the busier school holiday period.
We thank library users and the City’s customers for their patience and understanding during this period.
In the meantime, all other libraries and customer service centres remain open.

Geelong Regional Library Corporation Acting CEO Deb Sansom
