Quotes attributed to Cr Peter Murrihy, Chair, Central and Civic Geelong portfolio:
The council has heard clearly from the local community that they want to see ‘no camping’ laws at Eastern Beach vigorously enforced.
Eastern Beach is an iconic Geelong place and it’s very important that it’s maintained to a level that allows all people to enjoy it. The sight of tents, camping equipment and litter on the grassed areas completely spoils the outlook for others.
The City is working with police to closely monitor the area and do what needs to be done to make sure no further camping takes place at Eastern Beach. The swift response this morning indicates that this is happening.
Quotes attributed to Director Development, Design and Planning Gareth Smith:
Our Local Laws officers are monitoring the area closely and spoke to the group first thing this morning, asking them to dismantle their tents and move on. The group willingly packed up after being asked.
We intend to have prominent ‘no camping’ signage installed at Eastern Beach as soon as possible.
Our regular monitoring of the site will continue and any further campers will be moved on as quickly as possible.
