Our Future

Our Future is a project to develop a long term community vision for the municipality of Geelong.

We all recognise the potential of Geelong. Our Future will capture this potential, and guide decision making and investment in our municipality into the future.

More about the project.

Have your say

1.

Read about indicators of a successful community

As we ask what you think Geelong could look like in 30 years time, it’s important to consider the indicators of a successful community

2.

It’s time to decide – tell us your priorities

We’ve asked you how life in Greater Geelong could be improved, and now you can help us understand which ideas are most important for our region.

Take the survey

3.

Nominate to attend the Our Future Assembly

Nominations to attend the Our Future Assembly on Saturday 6 May 2017 are now open. At the Our Future Assembly, the community will debate and decide on the final vision for Greater Geelong over the next 30 years. To ensure representation from across the municipality, a selection of nominees will be invited to attend. Nominations close Friday 31 March 2017.

Jennifer says:

"I see Geelong as a green city ie: lots of trees, flowers, lawns, fountains, art etc. I see them receiving visiting artists from all genres due to Geelong being beautiful and having great facilities and innovative management. I also see the environment around all suburbs, not just the new ones, as being green and well maintained to encourage community pride. I also see us as being known for being the city of innovative businesses of the future. IE: new technology, innovative health hubs etc."

MIchael says:

"A city with emphasis on human scale development. Priority to moving people not cars. Greater emphasis on sustainable street design in new developments and sustainable buildings, not poor cheap design with an air-conditioner stuck on top to buildings to 'rectify' poor design that should be avoided in the first place."

Phil says:

"An excellent, spacious and vibrant community with a healthy balance between residential and commercial development, and green space. A community that takes pride in the cultural and environmental qualities that make Geelong unique. A healthy and relaxing place to live and visit. Creative and innovative, yet preserving and valuing it's unique natural environment. Promoting Geelong as a healthy green region, and gateway to the great ocean road."

Monica Walters says:

"A city we are excited and proud to live in with excellent two way accessibility to Melbourne and overseas via Train link to Avalon. Tourists who are time poor but money rich can access and stay in GEELONG (not missing it entirely as per Melbourne coaches exclusively using the Geelong ring road). Our Railway Station needs to be iconic/visible from Avalon - A tall sea-cliff structure with a eagles' nest atop (public lookout and park). see Redevelopment doc (0409933770)"

"In this period of great change and many planning projects to alter the City's look, it's vital that the best of the past is retained and combined with the new. Heritage overlays through exhaustive research, have established the significant places we need to conserve. The central city heritage overlays need review because some were completed many years ago and the statements are incomplete. The heritage overlays must be strongly upheld when planning permits are under consideration. "

"Geelong ought to be a world class regional city that people immigrate to because of the quality of urban life; they want to be hear to share in the thriving cultural landscape; to experience the smart, leading, innovative responses to a rapidly changing world all connected by a vast network of cycling, walking and public transport; supported by higher density living that responds to changing needs of households. Leading sustainability with focus on food security and craftmanship. "

Meme says:

"A flourishing environment with residents of all ages and ethnicities deeply engaged in their locality where they are able to both live and work. A Geelong that people from other parts of the state, and both nationally and internationally look to for inspiration regarding sustainable living practices of all kinds. At least once every two years, people make a point of walking some or all of a magnificent, greened, contemporary songline - Mountain to Mouth - respecting those who have walked before."

"Better connected bike paths to new areas such as Armstrong creek. Realisation of the Armstrong creek developments with schools and community services. Light rail public transport to costal communities, less cars, more employment options for our children in the technology industries, more cbd living and better use of the waterfront."

"A green, attractive city with a positive outlook, where 75% of people get around by active or public transport for 75% of the time, where there are diverse employers across all sectors spread across the municipality, where there are quality formal and informal educational opportunities for everyone, and where creativity and innovation is encouraged and practiced."

A city that is providing leadership on environmental projects and that is well connected by walking, cycling and public transport. A city that utilises technology to its full potential and has a culture that explores ideas, taking advantage of its Tafe and University sectors."

Tony says:

"We'll be living local - close to shops, education and entertainment that's lively and creative. Huge improvements to public transport, cycling and walking - you'll be able to walk, ride anywhere around Geelong because it's fun, safe and completely comfortable. Cars will be used much less. Streets to become parks. Sustainability will be the new normal - energy and transport more humble, powered by renewable. Lifestyle, work opportunities, community wellbeing will be off the charts"

22/11/2016
Joshua says:

"A climate resiliant, economically prosperous, socially inclusive and walkable city that is vibrant with native flora along all roads and on roofs alongside solar panels. Expressions of local creativity are celebrated, publically visible, and encouraged with emphasis on including at risk youth. Efficient public transport dominates the roads with less need for personal vehicles and old parking lots replaced with recreational green spaces. Residents of Geelong are now proud of their home."

27/10/2016
Dave says:

"Promote the location better to bring out its' beauty and sense of place. Promote startup culture with conferences, start up grants, and links to University. The internet communications technology industry could provide good jobs. Build high bandwidth infrastructure to attract investment and a digital culture. Make it accessible for all greater Geelong residents to kickstart this culture. "

26/10/2016
Anonymous says:
