Key findings

The first Big Play Day was first held in March 2012 to celebrate National Playgroup Week.

Since 2012 the event has been held twice a year, also celebrating National Children's Week in October.

It has grown in size from approx. 400 people to this years event which saw approx. 3,600 people in attendance.

The event was moved into the Geelong Botanic Gardens in 2015 to cater for the increase in attendees and the location has been embraced by the community.

29 organisations, including early childhood services, the TAC, National Wool Museum, Geelong Regional Libraries and Healthy Communities Geelong provided displays and activities. The support from the services provided a positive platform for partnerships for  building the further development of local events for children and families.

The attendance data and feedback reflected a positive outcome for the Big Play Day 2017.  Feedback from organizations and families attending was that the improved traffic management addressed the large volume of traffic in the area successfully.

Survey results showed that the majority of people who attended reside in the southern suburbs, followed by the east and most drove to the event with only a handful who walked or used public transport.
